Numerals – Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal numbers specify where something, somebody belongs to. English adds -th to form these numbers. Hungarian has the suffix –ik for that purpose when writing numbers in words. However, when numbers are written in figures, they are followed by a dot.

Hungarian: ötödik > 5.
English: fifth > 5th

0. is said like this: nulladik

1. első
2. második
3. harmadik
4. negyedik
5. ötödik
6. hatodik
7. hetedik
8. nyolcadik
9. kilencedik
10. tizedik

And above ten it looks like this:

11. tizenegyedik
12. tizenkettedik
13. tizenharmadik
14. tizennegyedik
15. tizenötödik
16. tizenhatodik
17. tizenhetedik
18. tizennyolcadik
19. tizenkilencedik
20. huszadik
30. harmincadik
40. negyvenedik
50. ötvenedik
60. hatvanadik
70. hetvenedik
80. nyolcvanadik
90. kilencvenedik
100. századik

More numbers:

21. huszonegyedik
34. harmincnegyedik
59. ötvenkilencedik
78. hetvennyolcadik
91. kilencvenegyedik

egy = első > NOT egyedik!
kettő = második > NOT kettedik!
három = harmadik > Drop-vowel word!
négy = negyedik > é becomes short e!
hét = hetedik > é becomes short e!
tíz = tizedik > long í becomes short i!
húsz = huszadik > long í becomes short i!

Higher numbers: ezer – ezredik (drop-vowel word!); millió – milliomodik; sokadik – umpteenth

You’ve surely realized the suffix -ik is preceded by a link vowel + d consonant. Well, it is due to the fact that Hungarian ordinal numbers are formed from fractions. The suffixes for ordinal numbers are:

-adik, -odik, -edik, -ödik

Question word: Hányadik? = What/Which number?

This question word is the same in Hungarian, but many times different in English.

Hányadik lettél az autóversenyben?
At which place did you finish the car race?

Hányadikba jársz?
Which class are you attending?

The question hányadik is not to be confused with hányadék, meaning icky, barf-out! 🙂

  1. Jana says:

    61) A „tíz = tizedik > long í becomes short i!“ sor alá még odaírható: „húsz = huszadik > long ú becomes short u!“ is.
    Itt van present perfect: „You’ve surely realized…“
    Mondat végére egy pont megy: „…are formed from fractions.“
    Ez egyszerűsíthető: „The suffixes for ordinal numbers are:“ –> Eredeti verzióban fölös szavak vannak.
    Jobb fordítás: „At which place did you finish the car race?“
    Ide egy vessző kellő: „…with hányadék, meaning icky, barf-out!“
